Researcher Paula Drumond from BPC PUC-Rio and postdoctoral fellow Bruna Soares from IRI/PUC-Rio, along with Professor Tamya Rebelo from ESPM-SP, wrote an article for the Le Monde Diplomatique Brasil website entitled: “Brazilian Gender Diplomacy”.

In the text, the authors analyze Brazil’s recent actions in promoting gender equality on the international stage, highlighting advances and ambiguities. They emphasize that, during the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in March 2026, Brazil played a relevant role in opposing proposals from the United States that sought to restrict references to gender and reproductive rights, helping to prevent setbacks in the international agenda.

This episode highlights a repositioning of the country in foreign policy since the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with a more assertive role in multilateral forums such as the UN. However, the authors point out that this stance is not homogeneous, being more cautious in spaces such as the BRICS. Finally, they argue that such variations raise questions about the coherence of Brazilian foreign policy, especially in light of persistent domestic challenges related to gender equality.
