Care Economy
In recent years, the care economy has emerged as a crucial field of study and debate, directly relating to issues such as unpaid work, social welfare and economic development. Far from being a mere domestic matter, care encompasses a wide range of activities essential to the functioning of society, such as caring for children, the elderly and sick relatives, for example.
However, it is important to pay attention to the (unequal) distribution of care tasks in Brazil and around the world. Women are still the main unpaid care workers within and outside the family. This disproportionate division can hinder women’s access to education, employment and professional development, as well as affecting family and community dynamics. This often reinforces preconceived gender norms and diminishes women’s ability to participate fully in the formal economy. The lack of accessible care facilities and adequate support policies also contributes to the increased burden on women, both mentally and physically.
