BRICS POLICY CENTER PARTICIPATES IN THE 2017 THINK-TANKS FORUM

The BRICS Policy Center participated in the 2017 BRICS Think Tank Forum, represented by its General Supervisor, Prof. Paulo Esteves. The Forum was organized in Beijing by the National Institute of Global Strategies (NIGS) and by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) on June 08th and 09th, 2017, with the theme “The coordination of BRICS Development Studies: Ways to Share Prosperity”.

While the US govt is withdrawing from its commitments with the Paris agreements and SDGs (underfunding the UN) the BRICS should step in. It is time to unpack what the group understands as “sustainable development”, establishing an agenda that contributes for the implementation of the Paris agreements and the SDGs. The BRICS Policy Center presented four points for a BRICS agenda:

1. Mainstreaming the SDGs in BRICS development financial flows, including those from the NDB

2. Bringing children into development strategies

3. Strategic Climate Adaptation

4. Health: Coordination for the WHO Reform and cooperation on Neglected Diseases
