BPC receives meeting of the inter-institutional project “Democratizing Defense”
On March 16th , a meeting of the inter-institutional science communication and outreach project “Democratizing Defense” was held in a hybrid format, at the headquarters of the BRICS Policy Center in Rio de Janeiro. Maíra Siman, Victória Santos and Eduarda Lopes, researchers at PUC-Rio’s Center on Democracy and the Armed Forces (NEDEFA), welcomed professors and students connected to the project “Armed Forces, Defense and Democracy in South America” of UFRRJ, led by Marina Vitelli; the Laboratory for Security and Defense Studies of UFRJ, coordinated by Adriana Marques; and the Brazilian Observatory on Defense and Armed Forces of Unifesp, led by Juliana Bigatão.
During the meeting, the participants watched the first episode of the webseries Democratizing Defense and planned the next steps of the project. The series aims to present essential concepts related to the role and supervision of military actors in a democratic regime. The goal is to contribute to the dissemination of democratic conceptions of civil-military relations and to foster social participation on the subject in Brazil. Production of the videos was supported by the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (FAPERJ); the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES); and the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IEAHu) at PUC-Rio.
