DR. PAULO SÉRGIO PINHEIRO CONFIRMED AS KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR GSUM’S 2015 WINTER SCHOOL
The Global South Unit for Mediation (GSUM) is honored to announce that the 2015 Winter School will count with the participation of Dr. Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, Brazilian legal scholar and UN Human Rights expert, who will open the school with the keynote speech “Monitoring Human Rights for the UN: From special rapporteurs to commissions of inquiry and the case of Syria”, taking place on July, 13th, 2015, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This event forms part of the academic activities of the school, but will be open to the general public; detailed information on the location and schedule will be released soon, through our website and social networks.
Chairman of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic since 2011, Dr. Pinheiro is professor of Political Science at the Center for the Study of Violence, at the University of São Paulo (NEV/USP) and adjunct professor of International Studies, at the Watson Institute for International Studies, at Brown University, USA. Dr. Pinheiro served as UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights situation in Myanmar (2000-2008) and as UN Special Rapporteur for Burundi (1995-1999). From 2003 to 2011, he was commissioner and rapporteur on children at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States (IACHR/OAS). The 2015 GSUM Winter School is a two-week intensive academic and training program on international mediation, taking place between 13th and 24th of July, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The school offers an intensive and substantial learning and training experience in both theory and practice of international mediation, with particular focus on issues and questions related to the Global South.
