Planetary Health

In recent years, Planetary Health has been presented as an alternative to One Health and EcoHealth. The concept was developed by the Rockefeller Foundation–Lancet Commission (2015), and it is possible to observe that this definition of planetary health reflects the view that human beings are valued more highly than other animals or ecosystems. This perspective is anthropocentric, focusing only on the outcomes of ecological change, climate change, land-use change, and transformations in food production in relation to the risks of zoonotic disease transmission to human health, without emphasizing the intrinsic values of ecological systems and biodiversity. In contrast, our approach places ecological values at the center of any future global health governance framework. This perspective is understood as an ecocentric approach inspired by a sense of responsibility and respect for our «mother earth» and for future generations.
