BPC/PUC-Rio researcher Pedro Silva participated as a guest commentator on the segment “From the Other Side of the World” on the program “Entretanto” on Metropolitana Rio radio, commenting on various international news items. Among them was the US Supreme Court’s decision that President Trump exceeded his authority by imposing a broad increase in tariffs on imports from several countries.

The researcher emphasizes that the decision establishes limits to presidential power and represents the biggest defeat of Trump’s second term. According to Pedro, this situation contributes to a scenario of legal uncertainty in the country, especially considering the Trump administration’s track record in both terms and its stance of not easily backing down from political and economic strategies.

Furthermore, the decision generated uncertainty in the market regarding the future behavior of tariffs and their possible inflationary impacts, since the president signaled resistance to fully accepting the Supreme Court’s understanding, leaving it undefined whether the tariffs will be reduced, maintained, or increased again.

The researcher also commented on expectations regarding the signing of the trade agreement between the European Union and MERCOSUR, highlighting that, despite the Brazilian government’s optimism, the agreement faces opposition from groups within the European Union. Finally, the researcher also commented on the importance of President Lula’s trip to India for strengthening ties between the two countries and reinforcing multilateralism.
