The Director of the BRICS Policy Center at PUC-Rio, Marta Fernandez, published an article on The Conversation Brasil website entitled: “From Panama to Venezuela: how the US transforms interventions into domestic politics”.

In the article, the director analyzes the kidnapping of Nicolás Maduro as part of a historical pattern in US foreign policy in Latin America, marked by the criminalization of leaders, selective delegitimization of sovereignty, and the use of security narratives to justify interventions, which then openly use violence and transform it into a spectacle.

Furthermore, Fernandez emphasizes that “For Latin America, the lesson is harsh, but well-known. This is not a historical novelty, but an update of an old pattern, which returns in new guises, with different degrees of violence and new justifications, without ever abandoning its structuring imperialist logic.”
