The researcher at the BRICS Policy Center/PUC-Rio and professor at UFRRJ, Ana Saggioro Garcia, took part in the webinar “Desdolarización en acción” organized by the Research Group “The Political Economy of South-South Relations” of the BPC/PUC-Rio in partnership with Latindadd
During the webinar “Desdolarización en acción”, BPC/PUC-Rio researcher and UFRRJ professor Ana Saggioro Garcia highlighted that the dollar is not only a currency, but also an instrument of power. Since the post-World War II period, it has underpinned U.S. hegemony, enabling the country to use its privilege to finance its international military system, the expansion of its companies, and its borrowing capacity.
According to the researcher, today there is increasing discussion about de-dollarization and the use of local currencies. In the face of economic crises, sanctions, and conflicts, space is opening for these alternatives. However, no currency has truly managed to replace the dollar. In this context, the BRICS must further advance their cooperation in expanding the use of local currencies and providing alternatives to the centrality of the dollar.
