BPC Opina: “BRICS Summit Declaration Includes AI as a Global Priority”

Donald Trump’s recent threat to impose new tariffs on countries that attempt to regulate US Big Tech companies has reignited the debate on global technology governance and digital sovereignty.

In the 13th episode of the BPC Opina series, IRI/PUC-Rio professor Luiza Lobato analyzes how the 2025 BRICS Summit placed artificial intelligence at the center of its agenda, recognizing the need to strengthen global AI governance and issuing its own declaration on the topic.
Lobato emphasizes that the document goes beyond AI and addresses the technology market as a whole, reinforcing the role of multilateralism—through the UN—and the importance of common rules for digital platforms, social networks, and innovation.

The episode gains new weight in light of current tensions: while the United States seeks to protect its technology giants, the BRICS countries present themselves as a strategic space to dispute rules and narratives about the digital future.
