The Director of the BRICS Policy Center at PUC-Rio, Marta Fernández, gave an interview to Valor Econômico

For Valor Econômico newspaper, Professor Marta, alongside other expert colleagues, shared her views on the challenges faced by the BRICS summit in reaching a consensus amid global conflicts such as the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. With the summit fast approaching, scheduled for July 6 and 7 in the city of Rio de Janeiro, there is growing concern that the final document resulting from the summit may be overly generic and lacking in substance given the current conflicts.

According to the professor, beyond the conflicts, the presence of 11 new full members adds to the difficulty in decision-making. She also emphasized that the situation in Iran ends up reinforcing the push for reform of the global governance architecture—one of the top priorities of Brazil’s BRICS presidency—even though it makes negotiations more complex.
