BRICS Policy Center welcomed representatives from Nelson Mandela University and the University of the Western Cape

On June 9, 2025, the BRICS Policy Center (BPC) welcomed Prof. Sibongile Muthwa, Vice-Chancellor and Director of Nelson Mandela University, South Africa’s representative on the BRICS Network University International Governing Board, and Prof. Umesh Bawa, Director of International Relations at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). The meeting was coordinated by José Ricardo Araujo, a researcher at CEBRI and student at UFRJ, who serves as the UWC liaison officer in the BRICS Rectors’ Forum.

The meeting was led by Prof. Marta Fernández, Director of the BPC, and focused on the strategic role of education and innovation in the BRICS cooperation agenda. Possible avenues for collaboration between the BPC and South African universities were discussed, particularly within the scope of the BRICS Network University, with the aim of strengthening knowledge production from the Global South and expanding joint initiatives focused on sustainable development, social justice, and inclusive global governance.
