Professor Sérgio Veloso, a researcher at BRICS Urbe, wrote an article called “Taxing the Super Rich for the Right to the City”.
The article “Taxing the Super-Rich for the Right to the City,” by Sérgio Veloso, addresses systemic inequality in Brazilian cities, rooted in an unjust tax system that disproportionately burdens the poor while the super-rich benefit from exemptions. Urban financialization, which turns land and housing into financial assets, exacerbates social exclusion and deepens the housing crisis. In this context, Brazil’s proposal at the G20 to implement a 2% tax on the super-rich is essential for redistributing wealth. The funds raised would be invested in infrastructure, housing, and public services, fostering greater equity in cities.
