The GSUM held the workshop “Masculinities, empathy and non-violence: Conceptual and political debates based on feminist theories”
On September 11, IRI/PUC-Rio through its Global South Unit for Mediation (GSUM) held the workshop “Masculinities, empathy and non-violence: Conceptual and political debates based on feminist theories” at the BRICS Policy Center. The activity, mediated by Prof. Marta Fernández, was the second meeting of the Cycle of Dialogues on Conflict, Violence and Peace in the Global South, which began in August and will continue until November 2024.
Based on feminist theories, professors Tatiana Moura (Observatório Masculinidades.pt and CES/University of Coimbra) and Haydée Caruso (University of Brasilia) debated the impacts of traditional male socialization on the perpetuation of violence, both physical and symbolic, and the role of empathy in transforming these dynamics. The professors also presented public policies and educational actions they have developed to promote gender equality and build more inclusive, caring and non-violent masculinities. The workshop also provided important methodological reflections on the ethical commitments involved in ethnographic practice.
The cycle of dialogues is part of the calendar celebrating 10 years of GSUM, a BRICS Policy Center project, with the support of CAPES PrInt PUC-Rio and FAPERJ Emergentes.
