BPC researchers receive funding for the Latin American Council of Social Sciences research

The researchers Maria Elena Rodriguez, Phelipe Machado, Candido Grinsztejn, and Ana Saggioro have been granted funding for research offered by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences.

The project’s central focus is to deepen the knowledge about the effects of commercial and investment treaties in Latin America and the Caribbean. These treaties have been signed in a global scale for the past three decades, marking a very specific form of economic insertion of the region’s countries in the global market. These treaties are about much more than tariff and market access, having consolidated themselves as regulatory hallmarks that constitute an international legal architecture.

Coming off this diagnosis, the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLASCO), the Plataforma América Latina mejor sin TLC, the Transnational Institute (TNI), the Escuela de Política y Gobierno de la UNSAM and the Sociedad Latinoamericana de Economía Política (SEPLA), have organized a call for projects with the goal of promoting the production of analyses that allow for understanding the legal aspects of theses treaties (and their clauses), just as much as the effects over the economies, state capabilities, environment, human rights, workers, small and medium businesses, access to public services, women, among other aspects.

The project contemplated that was proposed by BPC researchers is titled “Political economy of the South-South relations: an analysis of the investment treaties of the BRICS in Latin America and the Caribbean.
