The researcher from the BRICS Policy Center/PUC-Rio, Carlos Frederico Coelho, gave an interview to Globonews

The BPC/PUC-Rio researcher and IRI/PUC-Rio professor, Carlos Frederico Coelho, gave an interview to Globonews on the midday edition to analyze the meeting between the President of Brazil and the President of the United States (USA). In his statement, the professor highlighted that the meeting represents a relevant geopolitical gesture, focusing on the resumption of trade negotiations between the two countries, after the period of tension caused by the imposition of the tariff increase.

The researcher emphasizes that a preference for dialogue has always been present in Brazilian diplomacy, but observed that, this time, there is also an openness on the part of the United States, which signals a possible rebalancing in bilateral relations. Despite the optimism, he explained that this rebuilding of bridges is still underway. He also highlighted the American interest in regaining influence in Latin America, as well as the focus on Brazilian raw materials and Brazil’s rapprochement with China and other BRICS members.

According to him, the issue of sanctions against Brazilian ministers with revoked visas in the US was not addressed at this time, but may return in the future, as well as Brazilian mediation regarding the crisis in Venezuela, as trade negotiations advance and new fronts of dialogue are consolidated between the two presidents. Finally, the researcher commented on the tariff diplomacy carried out by the Trump administration, as an unpredictable policy without significant results, both with large and small nations that have already created strategies to mitigate these tariffs.
