The researcher at BPC/PUC-Rio and professor at IRI/PUC-Rio, Carlos Frederico Coelho, gave an interview to CartaCapital magazine.
In the article titled “On the Warpath” (“Em pé de Guerra”) in which he analyzed the repositioning of the United States (USA) in Latin America under the Trump administration, the researcher explained that low-intensity military actions, such as maritime interceptions, already occur and are part of the USA strategy of exerting political, economic, and military pressure on governments that do not align with its interests. Even so, he emphasizes that a ground incursion into Venezuelan territory remains unlikely.
According to him, the most plausible scenario involves the use of hybrid instruments to destabilize the Maduro government, which contributes to transforming Latin America into a zone of permanent pressure, as indicated by the tariffs imposed on Brazil and operations linked to the fight against drug trafficking. Finally, the professor warned of the increased USA military presence on the continent, driven by hostile speeches and symbolic measures adopted by Trump, which reignite debates about unilateral USA actions.
