The Professional Master’s Program (MAPI) of IRI/PUC-Rio held the Webinar “Brazil, USA, Tariffs and Sanctions”
On August 1st, the Institute of International Relations at PUC-Rio held a webinar on tariffs and sanctions between the US and Brazil. The discussion featured trade experts Carlos Frederico Coelho, Denise Gregory, Fernando Ribeiro, and Gustavo Niskier, professors at IRI and its Professional Master’s program.
During the webinar, the experts discussed two US government decisions that significantly impacted bilateral relations between the countries: the sanction against Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and the confirmation of a 50% tariff on several Brazilian products.
Carlos Frederico Coelho emphasized that, of all sectors, agribusiness is the most affected. The discussion then focused on how the industry reacted to the news, from the initial threat to the measure’s implementation. The reaction demonstrated surprise at the imposition of such a high tariff on Brazil, especially considering its history of partnership with the United States.
