The Director of the BRICS Policy Center, Marta Fernández, and the Deputy Director, Maria Elena Rodriguez, wrote an opinion piece for Folha de São Paulo titled: “BRICS as a Geopolitical Magnet.”

In the article, BRICS Policy Center researchers Marta Fernández and Maria Elena Rodriguez reflect on how BRICS has emerged as a center of attraction amid the current global geopolitical landscape. According to Professors Marta and Maria Elena, this growing appeal can be understood through two main pillars: economic incentives and the values that guide the group.

Countries seeking to join BRICS are motivated by the benefits membership can offer—such as intra-BRICS trade, which helps reduce vulnerability to sanctions and restrictions, especially in light of the high tariffs imposed by the current U.S. administration. Moreover, by advocating for a more equitable world order and reaffirming its commitment to multilateralism, BRICS conveys a worldview that resonates with countries of the Global South.

In this way, BRICS emerges not only as an economic or geopolitical bloc, but also as a space of resistance and a platform for building alternatives to the historical hegemony of the Global North.
