Maureen Santos, coordinator of the Socio-Environmental Platform at the BRICS Policy Center, gave an interview to France 24. The article, “BRICS Summit in Rio: Between the Expansion of the Bloc and Notable Absences” (originally titled “Cumbre de los BRICS en Río: entre la expansión del bloque y las ausencias notables”), highlighted climate change as a central issue of the summit, particularly with the anticipated BRICS Declaration on Climate Finance.
“When it comes to climate finance, the focus is usually only on mitigation and adaptation. But this is far removed from the debates of civil society, from the territories, from Indigenous peoples, from traditional communities. The focus must shift so that this funding truly reaches those most impacted—who also bear no responsibility—and supports the fight against inequality, which is the core of the climate justice issue,” said Maureen Santos, professor of International Relations at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and coordinator of the Socio-Environmental Platform at the BRICS Policy Center.
