Researchers Paula Sandrin, Maureen Santos, and Maria Beatriz Peixoto Mello, from the Socioenvironmental Platform, have published a new article: “From Baku to Belém: Brazil’s BRICS Presidency and the Paths to Finance Climate Justice.”
In the article, the authors analyze how Brazil placed the climate crisis at the center of discussions during its BRICS presidency in 2025, with an emphasis on international climate finance.
Brazil’s proposal aims to correct historical distortions, going far beyond the US$300 billion per year agreed upon at COP 29, held in Baku. Through the initiative “Route from Baku to Belém: Towards US$1.3 Trillion,” the country is pushing for a more realistic and ambitious financing goal.
In May, the BRICS countries approved a Framework Declaration on Climate Finance, proposing reforms in multilateral banks and the promotion of credit under more favorable conditions.
Finally, the researchers emphasize that the debate must go beyond the volume of resources: it is essential to ensure that climate finance promotes social justice and directly benefits the communities most affected by the environmental crisis.
