The researcher at the BRICS Policy Center/PUC-Rio, Pedro Silva, took part in the Mapa Mundi program on SBT News, discussing Donald Trump’s tariff hike and the recent increase in tariffs on BRICS member countries. In his remarks, he drew attention to the use of tariffs as a foreign policy tool, promoting bilateral trade negotiations in favor of the United States, but also to the domestic aspects of this policy.
He highlighted the central role of tariffs in Trump’s reshoring strategy, aimed at bringing back to the United States the industrial jobs lost during the process of global expansion. The researcher also stressed that Brazil’s strategies for responding to the tariff hike include strengthening the BRICS as a multilateral forum and delivering a collective response to Trump’s recent decisions.
