Waterfront Revilitalization in Port Cities: Risks and opportunities for emergent economies
This Policy Brief provides initial reflections to inform and deepen this debate through a comparative look at the revitalization projects, from the celebrated case of Cape Town to the recent initiatives of Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai and Mumbai. Starting with the available assessments of what is perceived as a success in the post-industrial context, case studies show similar approaches to revitalization in the broader context of urban planning in port regions. Advantages and limitations are explored in terms of creative strategies to increase soil occupation, accessibility, quality of life and sustainable urban ecologies, as well as alternative models of financing and management.
