The Development We Want: Bolsa Família as a Learning Experience for a New Agenda

The various models of a country’s development are at the heart of the interdisciplinary debate shaping Brazil’s current reality. However, much is lost due to opinions driven by love or hatred. Bolsa Família is just one of the many Brazilian social programs that provoke highly polarized reactions. But what is behind this heated debate?

Organized by Isabel Rocha de Siqueira and Paulo Esteves, the free e-book The Development We Want: Bolsa Família as a Learning Experience for a New Agenda aims to inspire a continuous discussion about the country’s development and foster more concrete and productive dialogues.

The book compiles transcribed contributions and articles from speakers at the event “The Development We Want: Bolsa Família and Brazil’s Loves and Hates,” hosted by the Institute of International Relations at PUC-Rio in May 2017. The debate begins with a reflection on the country’s development, considering Bolsa Família as a central theme.

The event sought to bring together voices from different academic backgrounds and institutional affiliations, as well as experienced professionals and public servants, resulting in a highly polarized discussion on the country’s future.

The texts gathered here feature contributions from the following authors: Flávia Oliveira, Aldaiza Sposati, Tiago Falcão, Maria Antonia Cardoso Nascimento, Romulo Paes, Debora Thome, Lenaura de Vasconcelos Costa Lobato, Rafael Georges, Mercedes González de la Rocha, Maria Ozanira, Paulo Januzzi, Eduardo Suplicy, Cleonice Dias, and Isabel Rocha de Siqueira.
