BRICS in Expansion: The Socio-Environmental Profile of the New BRICS+ Members and Partners

This publication consolidates and expands the analysis begun in the series “BRICS in Expansion”, published on the Socio-Environmental Platform’s Instagram profile between 2023 and 2025. This work is part of the BRICS Policy Center’s Socio-Environmental Platform’s commitment to the production and dissemination of knowledge.

Here we present the profiles of the 20 countries that, as of 2024, have intensified their involvement with BRICS – either through formal membership of the group, with the inclusion of 11 new members, or through the new status of BRICS “partners”, a category that includes another 9 nations.

With this analysis, we seek to illustrate the diversity of the new expanded BRICS – BRICS+, as it has been called. The new members and partner countries broaden the bloc’s diversity in several dimensions: geographical distribution, economic structures, socio-political contexts and environmental and climate profiles. To this end, we have compiled the main economic, social, political, environmental and climate data on these countries, accompanied by a contextualization of each country’s interest in joining BRICS or an emblematic case related to the environmental and climate crisis.
