BNDES and Financing the Energy Transition (2016-2023)

In recent years, there have been intense debates about climate change, global warming and environmental issues in general. In the context of international governance, the Paris Agreement, signed on December 12, 2015 and in force since 2016, is widely recognized as a conceptual, theoretical and practical milestone in the fight against climate change, as well as in promoting the energy transition.

With regard to the energy transition, the Agreement highlights the need to promote universal access to sustainable energy in developing countries, by strengthening the implementation of renewable energy sources.

In this context, the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) assumed, during COP27 (27th United Nations Climate Conference), held in November 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, the commitment to be carbon neutral by 2050, that is, by that date the Bank will no longer finance operations that emit carbon.
