China’s Dilemma: Between leadership in the energy transition and coal dependence

China is one of the biggest international players in the energy sector. The country accounts for 26.1% of worldwide primary energy consumption, ahead of the United States and Europe. In terms of electricity consumption, China also stands out, since it accounts for 29% of the world’s total electricity generation.
Because of the scale of its primary energy and electricity consumption, its significant funding and investment in energy sector projects abroad, and the scale of its production of renewable energy technologies, it is extremely important to monitor China’s actions regarding the energy transition due to their global impact.
