Professor Kai Michael Kenkel, from IRI/PUC-Rio, organizes international workshop on political activism and urban order in global cities
On April 9th, Professor Kai Michael Kenkel from the Institute of International Relations at PUC-Rio organized the international workshop “Political Activism and Urban Order: The Challenges of Guaranteeing Public Assembly Rights and Documenting Protest Policing Practices in Global Cities.” The workshop brought together around 30 Brazilian and international researchers who discussed activism and protest control in Rio de Janeiro, New York, and London.
The workshop marked the conclusion of a two-year research project funded by the British Academy. Throughout this period, the project team conducted interviews with activists in the three cities, visited police institutions, and built a database on methods of riot control and crowd management. Some preliminary analyses on the interaction between social movements and security forces were shared during the event.
The workshop, held at the BRICS Policy Center headquarters, also served to establish a research network on the topic.
