Plataforma Socioambiental attended a panel organized by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA)
The assistant researcher of the Plataforma Socioambiental of the BRICS Policy Center, Maria Beatriz Mello, participated in the panel “COP28 and the Just Transition Agenda: What role for BRICS+ and BASIC? “, organized by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), which took place on November 24 and was moderated by Alex Benkenstein, head of the African Resource Governance Program at the South African institute, and also featured a keynote by Ambassador Professor Anil Sooklal, South Africa’s BRICS Sherpa, and the participation of panelists: Samir Saran, president of the Observer Research Foundation (ORF, India); Victoria Panova, vice rector of HSE University (Russia) and former BPC Fellow; and Hongyu Guo from the Green Inovation Hub (China, virtually).
The event sought to bring about a pre-COP28 dialogue on the role of the BRICS+ and BASIC in the global response to climate change and in favor of a just energy transition and the possibilities for cooperation between the countries.
In addition to participating in the panel, the researcher attended the Cape Town Conversation conference, which took place from November 24 to 26 and was hosted by ORF, as the Think20 (T20) Secretariat of the G20, in partnership with the Thabo Mbeki Foundation. The event brought together participants from more than 40 countries to discuss the most pressing challenges for Africa and the world. Among the topics up for debate were: just green transition, women-led development, the future of multilateralism and digital transformation for development.
