Participation of the Socio-Environmental Platform in the Civil BRICS Summit 2023

Between August 1st and 3rd, the Civil BRICS Summit took place in Johannesburg, South Africa. The summit aimed to bring together civil society and academic organizations from BRICS countries and the African continent to promote discussions and formulate policy recommendations on topics such as just transition, strengthening multilateralism, women’s participation in peace processes, post-pandemic socioeconomic recovery and transformations of education systems. The aim is for these recommendations to be transmitted, in the form of a declaration and communiqués, to the participants of the BRICS Summit of Heads of State and Government, which will be held in South Africa from August 22 to 24.

The Socio-Environmental Platform of the BRICS Policy Center participated virtually in the discussions that took place during the three-day event and assisted in the process of formulating recommendations on just transition, highlighting the need for climate mitigation efforts to be undertaken in line with the valorization of the knowledge and ways of life of traditional communities, with the protection of biodiversity and with initiatives to fight against socioeconomic, gender and racial inequalities.
