The Director of the BRICS Policy Center / PUC-Rio, Marta Fernandez, and the coordinator of the Socio-Environmental Platform of the BPC, Maureen Santos, were interviewed by the site The Real News Network in the article: “Why is Donald Trump afraid of the BRICS?”

The researchers explained that BRICS represents a multilateral proposal, a movement that bothers the United States by directly confronting its hegemony, established for decades in the post–Cold War period. Thus, when the countries of the bloc begin to discuss the carrying out of commercial transactions among themselves without the use of the dollar, the USA begins to perceive BRICS as a concrete threat to its declining hegemony.

In the article was also highlighted the importance of the Civil/People’s Council of BRICS, an initiative that seeks to broaden the participation of civil society in the bloc’s discussions. This is especially relevant considering that the majority of BRICS countries, currently, have governments with little space for civil society.
