Marta Fernández, director of the BRICS Policy Center/PUC-Rio, and Ana Garcia, professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) and BPC researcher, gave an interview to the newspaper O Globo
During an interview titled “Trump launches preemptive strike to fragment BRICS, government officials and experts assess,” Ana Garcia highlighted that, under the Brazilian presidency, the BRICS agenda has shifted away from the issue of replacing the dollar, prioritizing initiatives aimed at facilitating trade between the bloc’s countries. Furthermore, Fernández explained that, although the proposal to replace the dollar is still far from becoming a reality, it already poses a threat to US monetary hegemony, which would explain the imposition of higher tariffs on the countries presiding over the bloc: Brazil (2025) and India (2026).
