Marta Fernández, Director of the BPC, co-authors article with Maria Luíza Figueiredo dos Santos: “Saudi Arabia and the BRICS: Positive Neutrality and Diplomatic Leadership in Multipolar Times”
The Director of the BRICS Policy Center, Marta Fernández, authored the article “Saudi Arabia and the BRICS: Positive Neutrality and Diplomatic Leadership in Multipolar Times”, in collaboration with Maria Luíza Figueiredo dos Santos, a graduate of the International Relations Institute at PUC-Rio.
The article is the result of research developed by Maria Luíza during her participation in the Institutional Scientific Initiation Program (PIBIC/CNPq), under the supervision of Professor Marta Fernández.
In this piece, the authors reflect on Saudi Arabia’s potential entry into the BRICS. The Saudi Kingdom has shown hesitation regarding its formal accession to the group. According to recent statements by the Minister of Economy and Planning, Faisal Al-Ibrahim, the country is still assessing the benefits and challenges before formalizing its entry. However, this is not merely a sign of indecision—it reveals a diplomatic identity built on what is referred to as “positive neutrality.”
