IRI/PUC-Rio professor and BPC researcher Kai Michael Kenkel gave an interview to AFP to explain the crisis facing some countries’ embassies in Venezuela.

The professor clarified some questions about R2P, or “the Responsibility to Protect” and also how this topic has proved pertinent in the Venezuelan case. He pointed out that “the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 establishes that the host country of the embassy has a responsibility to protect it, but that it is not ‘absolute’. Small deployments of military personnel to protect these sites are considered normal procedures and are also foreseen.”
