Carlos Frederico Coelho, Researcher at BRICS Policy Center of PUC-Rio, gave an interview to Valor Econômico
BRICS Policy Center/PUC-Rio researcher Carlos Frederico Coelho gave an interview to Valor Econômico newspaper on the topic “Tariffs challenge emerging economies and encourage Brazil to deepen and diversify relations.”
According to Coelho, Trump could pose an obstacle to the use of local currencies in international transactions, which is one of BRICS’ key goals. To prevent this scenario, he argues that Brazil should keep diplomatic dialogue open with its allies both inside and outside BRICS, particularly through multilateral organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO).
He also highlights the assertive tone of Brazil’s foreign policy, with well-placed criticisms of the U.S., and emphasizes that strengthening trade ties with Asian countries — beyond China — would be highly beneficial for Brazil.
