The BRICS Policy Center welcomed representatives from the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) this week for a strategic discussion on the BRICS, the global order, and Brazil’s role in this context. Representing the BPC were Marta Fernández, Carlos Frederico Coelho, and Ana Garcia. From SAIIA, attendees included Gustavo de Carvalho, Senior Researcher at the Institute, and Steven Gruzd, Head of the African Governance and Diplomacy Programme.

The conversation addressed key topics such as Brazil’s presidency of the BRICS in 2025, the direction of Brazilian foreign policy, the institutionalization processes of the group, civil society participation, connections with other multilateral platforms such as the G20 and COP30, as well as the importance of strengthening commercial ties among the BRICS countries. The meeting underscored the importance of dialogue between think tanks and researchers from the Global South in building a more equitable, democratic, and sustainable international order.
