BRICS Policy Center/PUC-Rio Socio-Environmental Platform Holds 10th Coffee with BRICS

The 10th edition of Café com BRICS, an event organized by the BRICS Policy Center’s (BPC) Socioenvironmental Platform, took place on August 22nd at the BPC headquarters. In this edition, we gathered for breakfast to discuss the main outcomes of the XVII BRICS Summit, held in July in Rio.

For this discussion, we were joined by Alexandra Morozkina, Vice-Rector for Research at the Higher School of Economics (HSE University, Moscow, Russia) and member of the BRICS-Russia Expert Council.

During her presentation, Alexandra highlighted three central themes addressed at the Summit: economics, artificial intelligence, and climate finance.

On the economic front, she highlighted progress in discussions on the use of national currencies in trade between the countries of the bloc, with the aim of reducing dependence on the dollar. Regarding artificial intelligence, she highlighted the novelty of the BRICS principles for AI governance, agreed upon during the Rio meeting. On the climate front, Alexandra commented on the unprecedented BRICS declaration on climate finance and the institutionalization of programs in this area, including the approval of the terms of reference for the BRICS Climate Research Platform.
