BRICS Policy Center of PUC-Rio hosted the debate “BRICS in Transition: from the Brazilian to the Indian Presidency”

On August 8, the BRICS Policy Center/PUC-Rio hosted the debate “BRICS in Transition: from the Brazilian to the Indian Presidency”, featuring researcher Manuel Gonzalo, along with comments from Marta Fernández and María Elena Rodríguez, respectively the director and deputy director of the BPC.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the transition of BRICS presidencies, focusing specifically on India’s role as the chair of the next BRICS summit. The discussion addressed the country’s possible strategies to consolidate itself as a relevant global actor while simultaneously strengthening multilateralism in an international context marked by geopolitical tensions and trade disputes—particularly considering the United States’ assertive stance toward the BRICS.

At the end, participants were invited to share questions and reflections on the expectations surrounding India’s performance in its upcoming presidency of the group, especially regarding the defense of Global South agendas and the promotion of international cooperation.
