BRICS Policy Center of PUC-Rio held the debate “Climate Justice on the Road to COP30”
The BRICS Policy Center/PUC-Rio, in partnership with OXFAM, held the debate “Climate Justice on the Road to COP30” on November 5 at the BPC headquarters in Laranjeiras.
The event was moderated by Professor Maria Elena Rodriguez (Associate Coordinator and Researcher at BPC/PUC-Rio) and brought together experts Carlos Aguilar (OXFAM Latin America), Daniela Vilar (Ministry of the Environment of the Province of Buenos Aires), and Maria Beatriz Peixoto Melo (BPC/PUC-Rio Socioenvironmental Platform).
At the beginning of the session, they presented the definition of “climate justice,” which can be understood as a perspective that recognizes that climate impacts do not affect everyone in the same way. It highlights who suffers the consequences and why, incorporating ethical, political, and social dimensions, as well as elements such as equality, human rights, and sustainability. The discussion also emphasized that access to and control over financial and common resources are fundamental for mitigation and adaptation. It is important to note that those who suffer the most from the consequences of climate change today are not the ones most responsible for the situation the planet currently faces—hence the need for differentiated responsibilities among countries.
