On July 4th, the BRICS Policy Center at PUC-Rio co-organized the seminar “The Crisis of Multilateralism and the Paths of the Global South,” held in partnership with the Novos Paradigmas Institute (INP). The event, which took place before the BRICS Summit, brought together researchers, activists, and representatives from civil society organizations to discuss the crisis of multilateralism and the paths toward a new international order led by the Global South.
The opening featured speeches from Isabel Siqueira, director of IRI/PUC-Rio, Jorge Branco from INPI, and director Sandra Bitencourt. The first session, titled “The Crisis of Multilateralism,” gathered figures such as Tarso Genro (former Minister of Justice), Maria Elena Rodriguez (IRI/PUC-Rio), Eleonora Betancur (Secretary of the Presidency, Colombia), Gustavo Westmann (Secretary to the President of Brazil), and Pedro Abramovay (Vice-president of Open Society) to discuss the impact of nationalism and hegemonic disputes on global dynamics.
The second session, “The Paths of the Global South,” included Marta Fernández (IRI/PUC-Rio), Rafael Heiber (Common Action Forum), Siphamandala Zondi (South African Institute of Political Studies), Coffi Bertrand (World Social Forum-Benin), Sandra Gallo (CEAAL-Argentina), Carmen Silva (SOS Corpo), and Wania Sant’Anna (Coalition of Black Rights) to debate cooperation alternatives in the Global South based on sovereignty, social justice, and solidarity.
