BRICS holds seminar on “Right to the City on the Global Stage”

On June 18, the seminar “Right to the City on the Global Stage: How do major international events and summits transform Rio de Janeiro?” was held at the BRICS Policy Center, as an extension activity of the course “Ethics and Practice of Research and Extension” at the Institute of International Relations at PUC-Rio. The course is taught by Professor Sérgio Veloso, who also coordinates the BRICS Urbe research project at the BRICS Policy Center. On the occasion, Professor Sérgio mediated the panel.

During the seminar, speakers Sandra Maria Teixeira (Vila Autódromo/Museu das Remoções), Camila Moradia (MEAA), Cunca Bocayuva (NEPP-DH/UFRJ) and Thainã Medeiros (Instituto Papo Reto) discussed the impacts of major events in the city of Rio de Janeiro, with emphasis on the evictions in the Vila Autódromo community, the PAC and Teleférico works in Complexo do Alemão, and the dynamics and struggles that have emerged from these processes. The role of NGOs, such as the Papo Reto Institute, in these issues was also discussed.

The seminar is available on the BRICS Policy Center’s YouTube channel:
