BRICS and LAS Debate Challenges and Prospects of China-Latin America Partnership
On May 29, the BRICS Policy Center and Latinoamerica Sustentable (LAS) promoted the webinar “CHINA-CELAC: Challenges and Perspectives for Latin America and the Caribbean”.
The event brought together experts on their countries’ relations with China: Maria Elena Rodriguez (Deputy Director of the BRICS Policy Center), Paulina Garzon (LAS-Ecuador), Camilo Defelipe (Universidad Javeriana- Colombia) and Maia Seeger (Sustentarse-Chile).
The experts began their reflections by highlighting the symbolism of the meeting in the current geopolitical scenario. With the doors of opportunity closing in the relationship with the US, China is emerging as a reliable strategic and financial partner for Latin America and the Caribbean and, for China, a crucial step towards greater international insertion.
Celebrating a decade of cooperation, the webinar delved into the central challenges that mark relations between Latin American and Caribbean countries and China, with special emphasis on environmental issues, and highlighted the need to build a collective project as a region, a future strategy for negotiating with China.
