BPC/PUC-Rio researcher Pedro Silva gave an interview to the Intriga Internacional podcast on Metropolitana Rio radio to discuss the geopolitics of the Arctic in light of recent tensions caused by the rhetoric of Greenland’s annexation.
Throughout the episode, Pedro explains that the Arctic region holds about 13% of the planet’s unexplored oil reserves and 25% of its unexplored natural gas, in addition to the projected existence of strategic minerals in Greenland. This scenario places the Arctic at the center of geopolitical disputes involving, above all, the US and Russia, whose domestic and international strategies include the region as a priority source of resources and exploration.
Furthermore, the researcher highlights the role of China, which is developing alliance strategies aimed at consolidating a Polar Silk Road, focusing on shipping routes, regional partnerships, and energy security, considered strategic for the country.
