Ana Garcia published the article “South-South Investments: Driver for Alternative Globalization? Examining China-Led Special Economic Zones in Brazil and South Africa” in the journal Critical Sociology. The article was written in collaboration with Lisa Thompson (University of the Western Cape) and Cleiton Brito (Federal University of Amazonas) and discusses China’s investments in Brazil and South Africa. The authors analyse the role of the BRICS in the global scenario of “deglobalization” and present two case studies on the environmental and labour dynamics in special economic zones in both countries. The article is the result of research supported by FAPERJ and the Karibu Foundation (Norway) and will unfold with an international seminar to be held at the Federal University of Amazonas and Lisa Thompson’s stay as a BPC fellow in September 2024.
