2016 LASA CONGRESS

The Latin American Studies Association (LASA) organized the 2016 LASA Congress, from the 27-30 May 2016, in New York City, United States, in which researchers of the BRICS Policy Center participated.

With more than 12,000 partners, LASA, which this year celebrates its 50th year, is made up of individuals and institutions dedicated to the study of Latin America, bringing together specialists of all disciplines and professions from all over the world. The “mission of LASA is to promote intellectual debate, research and teaching about Latin America and the Caribbean and their people throughout the Americas, to promote the interests of its diverse assortment of partners and to encourage civic participation by widening the network of relationships and by public debate”.

During the annual conference in NYC, some of the researchers of the BPC presented items about various topics related to the research of the center.

– On Friday 27th, Paulo Esteves, supervisor of the BRICS Policy Center, moderated the discussion about Brazilian Foreign Policy, and presented the paper produced together with Ms. Manaíra Assunção “Unpacking Brazilian South-South Co-operation: Policy Networks and Structuring Co-operation in Mozambique”

– On the 28th, in the round table discussion “International Security: Old or New Affairs?”, moderated by Rut Diamint (Torcuato di Tella University), about conflict mediation and resolution, the supervisor of the GSUM project, Mônica Herz, and the researcher Claudia Fuentes (GSUM/PUC-Rio) presented their papers “The Study of Conflict Resolution in Latin America” and “Is Brazil a Peace Promoter? Conflict Resolution in Brazil’s Foreign Policy”, respectively.

– On Monday 30th, the researcher Claudia Fuentes participated in the round table discussion “From hope to disappointment? Relations between Latin America and the United States in the Obama era” as a debater.
