Health Cooperation in South America: Making the Case of a Multilayered Regionalism
The text analyzes the evolution of regional health cooperation in South America, examining initiatives developed within the framework of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), as well as those promoted by regional organizations such as Mercosur, the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), and the Andean Community (CAN).
The authors argue that regional health governance on the continent is characterized by multi-layered regionalism, in which different institutions act complementarily to coordinate policies, disseminate best practices, and strengthen health governance at both regional and global levels.
