The Critical Approaches to Development Network (ACD-Rede), a research program at the BRICS Policy Center (PUC-Rio), has just released a policy brief titled: Financing for Development: Current Context and Trends Amidst the Crisis of Multilateralism
This policy brief, prepared by Professor Isabel Rocha de Siqueira, coordinator of the Critical Approaches to Development network (ACD-Rede), and research assistants Enzo Cosenza and Luis Ehl, seeks to analyze this worrying situation and point out factors to be observed.
The UN estimates that the funding deficit for sustainable development is on the order of 4 trillion dollars per year (United Nations General Assembly, 2025). The arrival of Donald Trump to power in the United States in 2025 represented not only an obstacle to the increase that was already diagnosed as necessary, but also led to catastrophic losses in both development financing and humanitarian aid volumes. The scenario of cuts, coupled with the climate and geopolitical crises, has intensified tragic situations in various parts of the world, and the responses that are taking shape in the face of these complex challenges have increasingly included private interests, whose actions need to be scrutinized if we want to avoid exacerbating inequalities.
