Organized by the\u00a0Global South Unit for Mediation (GSUM)<\/a><\/strong>, the\u00a0third edition of the Winter School<\/strong>\u00a0took place last\u00a0July<\/strong>. It happened in a two-week intensive academic and training program on international mediation, with roundtables that brought together academics and professionals of multiple institutions that are a reference in their respective areas.\u00a0The main courses were taught by Roxaneh Bazergan, Team Leader of the Mediation Support Unit, in the Policy and Mediation Division, United Nations Department of Political Affairs (DPA); Oliver Richmond, Professor of International Relations at the University of Manchester; Dominik Balthasar, senior researcher at swisspeace; Edy Kaufman, professor at the University of Maryland and Pablo Lumerman, founder and director of the organization Estudio de Valle, responsible for several mediation processes.<\/p>\n

Below there is a summary about the public events that took place at\u00a0PUC-Rio<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0BRICS Policy Center<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

OPENING SPEECH BY PRESIDENT ERNESTO SAMPER, UNASUR SECRETARY-GENERAL<\/strong><\/p>\n

On\u00a0July 12th, 2016<\/strong>, the\u00a0Global South Unit for Mediation (GSUM)<\/strong>\u00a0welcomed\u00a0Secretary-General of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and Colombia\u2019s former president, Ernesto Samper<\/strong>, to launch the third edition of the Winter School on Mediation. At the occasion, President Samper gave the speech\u00a0\u201cConflict and Peace in South America\u201d<\/strong>, in which he highlighted South America\u2019s peaceful vocation and UNASUR\u2019s role in maintaining peace in the region.\u00a0Norwegian Ambassador in Brazil, Aud Marit Wiig<\/strong>,\u00a0the President of PUC-Rio, Prof. Fr. Josaf\u00e1 Carlos de Siqueira<\/strong>, and\u00a0GSUM Coordinator, Monica Herz<\/strong>, also participated in the event.<\/p>\n

ROUNDTABLE “CONFLICT RESOLUTION AND MEDIATION IN LATINA AMERICA”<\/strong><\/p>\n

On\u00a0July 19th 2016<\/strong>, the\u00a0GSUM Winter School<\/strong>\u00a0held the roundtable\u00a0“Conflict Resolution and Mediation in Latin America”<\/strong>. The roundtable\u2019s aim was to\u00a0evaluate past and current conflict situations in Latin America<\/strong>, with a specific focus on the identification of best practices and methodologies in terms of conflict prevention, mediation and resolution.\u00a0The objective was to present and exchange ideas<\/strong>, tracking challenges and evaluating policy options for regional, national and local crises currently experienced by the region. The panel was composed by\u00a0Graciela Tapia (UNDPA)<\/strong>,\u00a0Pablo Lumerman (ACCESS)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Edy Kaufman (University of Maryland)<\/strong><\/p>\n

ROUNDTABLE “CONFLICT RESOLUTION AND DISARMAMENT”<\/strong><\/p>\n

On\u00a0July 21st 2016<\/strong>, the\u00a0GSUM Winter School<\/strong>\u00a0held the roundtable\u00a0“Conflict Resolution and Disarmament”<\/strong>. The panel\u00a0explored the challenges about disarmament processes<\/strong>, understood as a fundamental step for peacebuilding. By Analyzing the characteristics and complexities of processes of mediation and conflict resolution,\u00a0this roundtable provided the opportunity to also reflect on the contexts of local violence<\/strong>. The roundtable was composed by\u00a0Rob Muggah (Igarap\u00e9 Institute)<\/strong>,\u00a0Ignacio Cano (UERJ)<\/strong>,\u00a0Denise Garcia (Northeastern University)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Monica Herz (GSUM | IRI \/ PUC-Rio)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Beyond the Winter School<\/strong>, the\u00a0GSUM<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0BPC<\/strong>\u00a0held the colloquium\u00a0\u201cRegional Patterns of Inter-State Crisis Mediation\u201d<\/strong>, in which\u00a0GSUM fellow\u00a0Markus A. Kirchschlager<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(GIGA Institute of Middle East Studies)<\/strong>\u00a0presented his recent research about regional patterns in the ways mediation is practiced.<\/p>\n
