{"id":4212,"date":"2017-04-19T16:55:45","date_gmt":"2017-04-19T19:55:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/devbrq.fazti.com.br\/?p=4212"},"modified":"2018-03-16T17:02:27","modified_gmt":"2018-03-16T20:02:27","slug":"the-concept-of-perception-is-discussed-by-debora-terra-in-a-colloquium-at-the-brics-policy-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bricspolicycenter.org\/en\/the-concept-of-perception-is-discussed-by-debora-terra-in-a-colloquium-at-the-brics-policy-center\/","title":{"rendered":"THE CONCEPT OF PERCEPTION IS DISCUSSED BY D\u00c9BORA TERRA IN A COLLOQUIUM AT THE BRICS POLICY CENTER"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On\u00a0<strong>April 11th, 2017<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>BRICS Policy Center<\/strong>\u00a0held the colloquium<strong><em>\u00a0\u201cO Poder das Percep\u00e7\u00f5es e o Brasil no Cen\u00e1rio Internacional\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 resulted from the work of visiting researcher D\u00e9bora Terra (University of Lisbon) \u2013 who is in the Center through the program\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.primo-itn.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Power and Region in a Multipolar Order (PRIMO)<\/a><\/strong>. The colloquium counted with the presence of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.puc-rio.br\/en.php\/team\/core\/1\/show\/724\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Andrea Ribeiro Hoffmann<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0from the<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.puc-rio.br\/en.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0International Relations Institute of PUC-Rio<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0who acted as discussant.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the colloquium several issues related to the\u00a0<strong>concept of perception on the International Relations\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0stage were tackled. In that sense, D\u00e9bora Terra introduced\u00a0<strong>the concept<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0its impacts<\/strong>\u00a0on the different and continuous expectations that the international actors have about themselves and the others. In that perspective, however, it should be emphasized that an\u00a0<strong>image is a concept and not a real action.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Terra also pointed out the possible existence of\u00a0<strong>misperceptions<\/strong>\u00a0about ourselves and the others. For example, the perception of Brazil as a key actor on the security issues may be wrong, and that could lead to inaccurate actions for the country. However, in the environmental area Brazil is aware of its significant influence, so it reduces the possibility of misperceptions and leads to more suitable behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>According to D\u00e9bora Terra,\u00a0<strong>\u201cthe external perceptions explain to what extent the actors of the international system are being globally consolidated and legitimate theirs actions\u201d<\/strong>.
