On November 11, at 3:00 PM, the Socio-Environmental Platform of the BRICS Policy Center held the panel “Monitoring Climate Ambition in the Global South” as part of the Regional Climate Foundations (RCF) Pavilion program, located in the Blue Zone of COP30.<\/p>\n
The event marked the launch of the Global South Climate Ambition Observatory, an unprecedented initiative of the Socio-Environmental Platform of the BRICS Policy Center, supported by the Climate and Society Institute (iCS). The presentation was led by Maureen Santos and Maria Beatriz Mello, who highlighted the goals of the Observatory and its importance in strengthening cooperation among Global South countries on the climate agenda.<\/p>\n
The panel also featured Romy Chevallier (SAIIA \u2013 South Africa) and Sergio Chaparro (Dejusticia \u2013 Colombia), who shared regional perspectives on the challenges and opportunities for advancing climate ambition.<\/p>\n
Romy presented South Africa\u2019s new NDC, submitted to the UNFCCC on October 24, stressing that discussing climate ambition in the country requires framing the just transition as a central element. Meanwhile, Sergio discussed Colombia\u2019s leadership in the international arena by joining the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. He also emphasized the need for fair climate financing from the Global North to the Global South and highlighted opportunities for Latin America\u2019s integration into new markets through a strengthened climate ambition agenda.<\/p>\n
